Brief Description | Things at Burke-Gilman Brewing are changing, and we need a new Head Brewer to continue our mission. We are a small neighborhood brewery (approx 400bbl/year) that strives to make world-class beer. We have won multiple state and national-level awards, while still building strong relationships with our local customers and fellow breweries. We’re looking for a great candidate to join us in doing that. BGBC has a strong emphasis on continual improvement through research for recipe development and general brewing knowledge. That research will be applied to recipes that you develop and brew, with the intent of making better beer. We emphasize quality, and novelty when we can find it. There’s a lot here! But it’s going to be fun, and you’ll gain a great deal of knowledge, experience and networking. We are committed to helping you grow and thrive in your role here long-term. Requirements 3+ years hands on brewing & cellaring experience, preferably with 1+ years acting as head brewer Ability to brew a broad variety of high-quality beers, while developing excellence in the styles our guests enjoy most. A growth mindset - a belief that we can continually improve A creative approach to brewing and cellaring A desire to create new things, to make great beer that can impress judges, guests and fellow brewers alike Ability to work on your feet all day in a cramped environment. Ability to move heavy objects, either yourself or with mechanical aid, and lift 55lb/25kg at a time Ability to work drug and alcohol free Ability to put safety first, quality a close second, everything else after that Ability to work independently and build your own schedule- much of the time, you will be by yourself Ability to work as part of a team - coordinating with FOH staff on work in common areas, helping you with certain tasks, timing of beer releases, etc. Willingness to engage with the public and the industry (for example, lead an occasional public tasting session, talk with a writer about an article they’re writing, etc.) An enthusiasm for educating guests and employees about our beer, from process to tasting. Occasional travel for brewfests and/or collabs (to be negotiated and determined on a case by case basis) Responsibilities In partnership with ownership, you will lead every aspect of our production operations, including brewing, cellaring, quality control, packaging, recipe development, inventory management, assembling orders of raw ingredients and chemicals. We have a 7bbl direct fire 3 vessel brewhouse, with 8 7bbl fermenters. We also have a small barrel aging program. Benefits Compensation for 40 hours per week at $30 per hour Three weeks of paid vacation per year, about 10 paid holidays per year Health insurance stipend to help you find a good plan Freedom and autonomy to help define the role Quality of work and creativity is highly valued Time to research, design, and brew your own beers (we have some long standing recipes and ideas for new beers, but we’re very eager to hear your ideas as well) This job will be what you make of it and you will be limited only by your own work ethic and creativity Burke-Gilman is an equal opportunity employer and believes that who you are is an important aspect of what you bring to the job. If you feel you meet most of the requirements, but not all, please apply, and we can talk about your capabilities and potential. |
