When I moved to a goat farm after the devastating Gatlinburg wildfires in late
2016, I never expected to fall in love… with craft beer. Ever since I started
working at a local brewery I have been enamored with beer and the brewing
process, so much that I started homebrewing and looking for scholarships in
brewing. Fast-forward a few years later and I have accepted a job in canning and
cellar work. This job came from a journey of volunteering, education, and most
importantly, beer.
I first started brewing at home like many others by making meads, beer and
anything else that I could ferment. I was captivated with the brewing process
instantly and felt in my gut that this is what I wanted to do for a living. I knew I
needed to go to school to learn more about brewing to build a solid foundation, as
most of my brewing came from a “feel” of brewing. As Charlie Papazian says in
The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, “It is about feeling your beer and letting your
beer feel you.” While this is a great skill set in craft brewing and a priceless
education, my scientific method behind beer was lacking. I heard that Siebel
Institute of Technology was the way to learn from many professional brewers, so it
was a course from them that I focused on. I needed to take the Siebel W1 course so
I could understand the technical part of brewing, to combine my hands-on learning
with mechanical learning, and most importantly to grow in my career.
I came upon the Pink Boots Society as I was searching for a scholarship at Siebel. I
Googled “scholarship for Siebel Institute of Technology” and the Pink Boots
Society website was the first thing to pop up. I went through the site and was so
excited that I stumbled upon this group of female beer professionals. I signed up
that very day, submitted a request for volunteering and started working on my
scholarship application for the Siebel Concise Course in Brewing Technology. I
felt that it would better my chances of getting a scholarship if I volunteered for this
organization, and I was right. I learned a lot in that first year about Pink Boots and
it helped kick start my volunteer work for the following years. I went on to
volunteer at the local Biere de Femme in Asheville, North Carolina and met many
women that I had only known through email. This experience as a whole taught me
that I could be a part of something big and work hard for something I believe in.
I ended up receiving the scholarship for the Siebel online course at the beginning
of 2019 and attended over the summer. It was a whirlwind of information and I
stayed glued to my computer.

The Siebel class really helped me see the bigger picture behind brewing and answered a lot of my technical questions about brewing on a commercial system. For those of you who have not looked into the course, it is basically an overview of everything in brewing, from water chemistry to cleaning kegs, in three months. If you are planning on taking the course, I would suggest taking an organic chemistry class before taking the Siebel online class. I was fortunate enough to take a craft beer chemistry class the year before and it
really helped me digest what the Siebel course was teaching me in the organic
chemistry lectures. There were many positives of this course. I really enjoyed it
because it was online and I could work on it on my schedule and not be tied to a
class time every week. I also enjoyed the weekly discussions with the class and
instructor about that week’s topic. The instructors were awesome and there to
answer whatever question you have. One drawback for me was that since I was
still bartending, I was not able to apply what I was learning in the physical right
away. But that is why I was taking the class: to get a working knowledge of
commercial brewing in order to get a foot in the door. So, I took extensive notes
and frequently talked to professional brewers I know about whatever subject I was
learning about that week. I ended up passing the class with an “A!”
The significant thing that I learned is that I could spend my whole life learning
about beer and still never know all there is to know. That is why I love this career
and industry so much.
The Siebel Concise course in Brewing Technology has changed my life. With this
education I have been able to land a job in a brew house doing canning and cellar
work. This opportunity also allows me to grow within the company so I can
eventually brew beer commercially. I would not have gotten this job without my
certificate and for that I am very thankful to Pink Boots Society. In my journey I
was supported by women who I did not even know, I found stories that I could
relate to, I found ideas for growing my career and my beer, and most importantly, I
felt like I had found family.

Study Abroad Scholarship Program

Hey everyone, Nichole here! Normally my focus is on our chapters but I wanted to share a little information about our current scholarship and what you can expect from it!

Our friend Tom came to us with the idea for the Cultural Immersion Tour about 5 years ago and it quickly became a staple of our scholarship program. For many years we have provided our members the opportunity to take a 2 week trip around Bavaria immersing themselves in rich and historic brewing processes (and just a couple of liters of weissbier).

Recently one of our newer PBS members Dr. Catherine Brewer, who works for New Mexico State University, approached us with the idea of a new scholarship: one with more education and a chance to visit new places. We couldn’t say no!

They have faculty-led international programs, and this one is Dr. Brewer’s baby. I know the details are scant on our scholarship page so I wanted to make sure everyone had an idea of what this new scholarship opportunity is all about.

For the first year, the plan is to visit Belgium and The Netherlands. You will be visiting places like Cantillon, beer museums, a really cool brewing school in Gent which is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and more! There are so many new and tangible educational components with this opportunity, and we are really excited to have this as our new international experience! At our 2019 board retreat this year we talked about how we want to increase our scholarship opportunities while ensuring they have as much value as possible… we feel this is a great start!

Are you a student? You will receive clock hours for this tour. One more time: THIS TRIP COUNTS TOWARDS COLLEGE CREDIT!

And to keep things interesting: Every year she plans to change the countries and itinerary completely. She is already looking into planning trips to South Africa, European countries (including Germany), and potentially Asia! I can’t wait for us to have these chances to really explore the world and continue to learn and better ourselves.

Now get applying!  https://www.pinkbootssociety.org/scholarship-application/

We are so excited about Pink Boots Brew this year! Thanks to the generous folks at YCH Hops, we have an amazing and unique blend of hops chosen by our members for this year’s Pink Boots Brew (formerly Big Boots Brew).  Read the YCH Hops blog for the background story AND learn what hops the blend contains. At the end there’s a link to order hops for your brew this year. Make sure to order your hop blend by February 1st!

PINK BOOTS BLEND RELEASED

YCH HOPS and the Pink Boots Society, a global nonprofit organization supporting women in the brewing profession, are thrilled to announce the release of an exclusive hop blend to celebrate women in the beer and brewing industry. This proprietary hop blend officially named Pink Boots Blend will be available to commercial brewers and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Pink Boots Society scholarship funds.

The idea to collaborate on a hop pellet blend stemmed from a casual conversation between YCH HOPS CEO Mike Goettl and Regional Sales Manager Kelly Lohrmeyer while walking through the hop fields during the annual Hop & Brew School event. They both spoke of their shared passion to encourage and support female brewing professionals. What started as a casual conversation quickly led to a partnership with The Pink Boots Society (PBS).

“Organizations like Pink Boots Society have been close to my heart being a woman in the beer industry,” says Kelly Lohrmeyer, YCH HOPS Regional Sales Manager for the Pacific. “I’ve grown close with President Laura Ulrich since moving to California, so when Mike suggested we look at working with PBS on a blend, I knew that Laura’s team could help make this a reality. I am very excited to see where this blend goes in the beer community and in accelerating collaboration across the globe with women and beer!”

During the 2017 Great American Beer Festival in Denver, YCH HOPS staff and PBS members met to rub, smell and experience a selection of hop samples for the upcoming blend. This year’s blend includes Palisade®Simcoe®Mosaic®Citra® and Loral®.

“During the meeting and hop rub at the Great American Beer Festival, one goal that stood out amongst all of us was that we wanted a multi-purpose hop,” says Laura Ulrich, President of Pink Boots Society. “Ideally our choice of blend could be used for bittering, aroma, and during dry-hop. A brewer can use this hop through the brew, or just in a single charge. The blend character itself is fruity but not overly tropical, with more dominant citrus and herbal notes. The small addition of Simcoe® gives the blend just a hint of old school, while others like Loral®, Citra®, and Palisade® will help drive the fruit flavors forward. And really, who doesn’t love Mosaic®, so we added at touch of her too.”

The hope is that a new blend will be chosen during the harvest season by members of Pink Boots Society and processed into traditional T90 pellets at YCH HOPS production facilities. The hop blend will be released to commercial brewers prior to International Women’s Day on March 8th and are encouraged to create their own celebratory brews. The blend will be sold by YCH HOPS with limited availability, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pink Boots Society Scholarship funds.

Pink Boots Society Scholarship funds help to allow women in the industry attend educational seminars, classes, certifications and tours. Using the scholarship program, PBS aims to empower women beer professionals to advance their careers through education. Scholarship opportunities are open to women anywhere in the world who are actively employed in the beer industry.

The annual Pink Boots Blend is YCH HOPS’ latest commitment to embracing and furthering diversity in the industry. They are proud to support women from across many facets and functions of the brewing industry. The YCH HOPS family also includes a female hop grower/owner and three women that sit in senior leadership positions, including two in the C-suite.
