The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Ann Sandbrook of Virginia Tech Enology Analytical Services Laboratory is the recipient of the Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they selected Ann to receive this scholarship because “she is in a unique position to take information learned in the course, apply it outside of a brewery, but still impact a great number of brewers. Her current role, passion, and compelling recommendation all contributed to her being selected.”

Ann started her career in the brewing industry in 2011 and currently works as an Analysis Lab Specialist at Virginia Tech Enology Analytical Services Laboratory, which was originally started to serve the needs of a growing wine industry in Virginia. Hops analysis was added at the request of the Hops Growers and Virginia Commonwealth Extension and they provide both pre-harvest and harvest sampling analysis. In her role Ann performs analytical tests on wine, beer and spirits to help identify problems and quality issues in products, and help to educate companies regarding processes, and issues that may arise.

Currently focusing on analytical and quality determinations of beer, Ann’s long term goal, which ties in with her pursuit of a Master’s Degree focused on sensory differences during fermentation, is to develop a sensory program at the Laboratory. “Completing this course will help me in my mission of outreach within the brewing industry and further my ability to connect with this industry and with local brewers. By learning more of the full brewing processing, packaging and serving mechanisms covered in the Cicerone program, I will be able to participate more with our area’s industry,” she says. Ann also looks forward to being able host more workshops and to offer more education opportunities in order to better the quality of the brewing industry.

The Cicerone BeerSavvy® Course is comprehensive self-paced online beer training course designed to enhance knowledge of brewing techniques, beer styles, understanding flavors and off-flavors, food pairings and the language to clearly discuss beer. The course is beneficial for many people who work in the beer industry including those who are educating others about beer.

In addition to attending the course, Ann will receive a pair of pink steel-toe rubber boots when she fulfills the Pay It Forward requirement associated with the scholarship.

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Brooke Franus of Stewards of Beer is the recipient of the Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they selected Brooke to receive this scholarship because “she understands more than most the need for education and teaching, the sharing of knowledge. She has a solid vision for what this course can help her create and give back, including being a positive role model for others in her company and brewing community.”

Brooke started with Stewards of Beer, one of Pittsburgh’s leading craft beer promotions/marketing companies, part-time in 2013 while she was primarily employed as an adjunct teacher to adult and K-12 students and leader of workshops and training presentations in the education field. At the end of 2017 she accepted a full-time role in the beer industry as their “Chief Edutainment Officer,” a position that will focus on continued growth of their client base and educational offerings.

Since 2013 Brooke has been instructing potential customers about beer styles, flavors and breweries to help them make an informed purchase that they would be happy with. When the company recently began offering non-credit beer education courses through the local community college she became an unofficial teaching assistant, drawing upon her years of experience in the education field. “Being a teacher is woven into the fiber of my being and I consider that educational spirit to be a core principle of who I am. So it only makes sense that I’m always looking for ways to incorporate teaching and learning into what I do,” she says. Brooke is looking forward to the knowledge she will gain from this course, her first foray into professional education in the beer industry, and starting down a path of what she hopes will lead to teaching classes on her own and creating an environment that encourages more women to attend.

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Melissa Hoffmann of Lost Rhino Brewing is the recipient of the Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they selected Melissa to receive this scholarship because “having just made the leap to the brewing industry she is a great fit for the course.” In addition, she “has great enthusiasm for learning as much as possible.

Melissa joined Lost Rhino earlier this year, making a career change from the degree she earned in biology and work at a large bio pharmaceutical company. She says, “I’ve tried my best to absorb all of the knowledge possible from those around me, and with that positive push for learning, I’ve found myself having become a jack of all trades for the company. While my prime position is in the brew house, you can also find me tending bar, giving tours, and working off site events. While honored to have been trusted with many hats, there is certainly more education needed on my part, and I see the Cicerone Level One certification as my next step in my continued education in the beer industry.”

On her decision to the brewing industry she admits, “I’m no spring chicken. I took a leap of faith changing careers.” As one can imagine she sometimes questions that decision. When those doubts pop up she says, “That’s when I pull up the Pink Boots Society website or my chapter’s Facebook page and I see there are other women out there just like me. Trying their best to find a meaningful career that is rewarding. Trying to break the bearded man stereotype. The Pink Boots Society has given me the motivation to continue this journey. With the receipt of this scholarship, I hope other women will be motivated just like I have. It’s never too late to make a change. Regardless of age and experience you’re never done learning.”

Cicerone BeerSavvy® Scholarship Recipient Announced

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Kate Irving, owner/brewer/operations manager of Hopkinsville Brewing Company, is the recipient of the Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they chose Kate to receive this scholarship because they feel that “as she is already in the thick of running a nano-brewery, she is in great need of this knowledge.”

Kate’s 2.5-bbl nano-brewery in Hopkinsville’s Downtown Renaissance District is a small operation and as such she wears many hats: managing the day-to-day operations of the brewery, planning the production schedule, handling quality control, managing administration, training and payroll as well as devising and implementing the company’s branding and marketing campaigns. Her main career goal is to expand to a 7- to 10-bbl system in the next five years and in order to do so, taproom sales will need to increase.

She knows that making sure she and her eight-member staff are knowledgeable about beers will be integral to that. Kate says, “I’ve found that many of our customers want to talk about beer – and although I’m extremely knowledgeable about our own eight beers, I don’t know as much as I should about beer in general. I believe taking this course and passing the exam will improve our overall level of service, and since the majority of our servers are female, I’ll be in a position to encourage and help them achieve their own certifications.”

Cicerone BeerSavvy® Scholarship Recipient Announced

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Libby Murphy, Editorial Assistant at Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, is the recipient of the Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they chose Libby to receive this scholarship as they feel “it will definitely help her credibility in her writing and help her with the depth of content.” They found it “exciting that her primary career is not the usual brewery/tap room—she wants to have the most education possible to assist her in her current career and is driven to make herself valuable when communicating with the beer industry.”

As Editorial Assistant Libby writes articles about the craft beer scene and home brewing, edits articles written by others and performs fact checks. She says that “getting a job writing and editing for a well-respected beer publication has been a dream come true.” However even with experience as a homebrewer for over 15 years she often feels intimidated by what she doesn’t know. “I quickly came to realize that I need far more formal education to bring my beer knowledge skills up to par with those I’m working with, interviewing, and socializing with on a professional level” she acknowledges. The course will both bolster her knowledge and help her feel more confident in her palate as she achieves a greater understanding of the many nuances of beer.

Galit

Cicerone BeerSavvy® Scholarship Recipient Announced

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Galit Deviri, co-owner of Beer-D Brewing Supplies in Tel Aviv, Israel, is the recipient of the second 2015 Cicerone BeerSavvy® scholarship.

Chosen by the PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, they chose Galit to receive this scholarship because although she is one of the few women in the beer industry in Israel she, “is already doing so much to heighten exposure,” and is, “motivated to grow the industry as a whole and for women.”

During the last decade Galit has worked to support Israeli beer culture by opening Beer-D, a craft beer center that imports to Israel and markets all brewing ingredients both for home brewers and craft brewers, holds courses for home brewing and beer tasting workshops, organizes beer brewing competitions and helps home brewers with recipe formulation. The Israeli craft beer industry is on its initial steps and by taking this course Galit intends to, “strengthen my status as professional authority so I can continue my efforts in marketing the women role in this industry.”

In 2014 she participated in International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, IWCBD, and donated the proceeds to single parent mothers. Currently she’s working with Tuborg Israel on a project for International Women’s Day and as part of that plans to connect them to IWCBD. She’s looking forward to opening opportunities to promote the female voice in the “menly” Israeli craft beer scene.

Melissa Maki

Cicerone BeerSavvy® Course Scholarship Recipient Announced

The Pink Boots Society is proud to announce that Melissa Maki is the recipient of the 2015 Cicerone BeerSavvy® Course scholarship. Melissa is a beer writer who has had articles published in All About Beer, Celebrator Beer News and most recently, American Brewster.

The PBS Scholarship Selection Committee (SSC), five very experienced women beer professionals who hold positions as brewers, educators and writers, chose Melissa to receive this scholarship as a way to help this dedicated beer writer gain more knowledge, a springboard to her delving deeper into the field.

In 2009 Melissa had the opportunity to live in Belgium for a year, during which time she found work as a journalist under a “kickass female editor who took a chance on me and encouraged me to write pieces about subjects like breweries and bike rides.” She wrote about De Dolle, Westvleteren and An De Ryck, one of the few female brewers in Belgium. Melissa described it as “the ultimate dream job” and it was so influential that when she returned to the United States she knew couldn’t go back to a regular job. Instead she, “wanted to embrace a career as a freelance writer—and ultimately (hopefully) a beer writer.”

Melissa writes about more than just beer but beer and women in the beer industry are her favorite topics to write about and it is her goal to turn the tide so that the majority of her income is from those subjects. Working towards that she feels that, “the BeerSavvy course would allow me to start the process of acquiring advanced technical knowledge, which would also give me a higher level of confidence in my own abilities.”

The Cicerone BeerSavvy® Course is comprehensive self-paced online beer training course designed to enhance knowledge of brewing techniques, beer styles, understanding flavors and off-flavors, food pairings and the language to clearly discuss beer. The course is beneficial for many people who work in the beer industry including beer writers.
