Welcome back to Membership Spotlight!

This month we are featuring Lisa Allen, head brewer at Heater Allen in McMinnville, Oregon.
What is your role in the industry?
I am the head brewer at Heater Allen Brewing in McMinnville, OR, but it’s a very small, family business so I wear a lot of hats. I’ve done everything from cleaning kegs to delivering them, cellar work, lab work, you name it, I’ve probably done it.

How long have you been a Pink Boots Member?
I’ve been a Pink Boots member since 2010, right around the time I entered the industryPink Boots was really small back then! My friend Sarah Forga (who is no longer in the industry but brewed at several different spots around Oregon before changing fields) told me about the group and convinced me to go to a meeting with her.

What, in your opinion, are the greatest benefits of the Pink Boots Society?
For me the greatest benefit has been meeting other ladies in the industry. A lot of the other women brewers I’ve met and connected with I’ve met at a Pink Boots meeting or a Pink Boot adjacent event. Even though I have yet to receive one myself, I have to say scholarships. Education is so important in any industry and in an industry where workers are often under paid or don’t have many benefits, etc. having an opportunity to get education for free or cheap is so beneficial. And especially having a group that provides scholarships for women in an industry that is very male dominated, it helps us get a leg up.
What is your favorite thing about working in the beer industry?
My favorite thing about the industry is the people. I have met so many great people through the beer industry and I continue to daily.
What is your proudest Pink Boots / beer industry moment?
My proudest Pink Boots moments happen whenever I see someone I know receive a scholarship. I’m happy for everyone that receives one, but when it’s someone you know personally and/or are good friends with it touches a little closer to home and makes me proud to be a part of this organization.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about the work you do, or your involvements with Pink Boots?
Well…currently I am the Portland Chapter Financial Liaison, it’s been really interesting learning about all of the ins and outs of the financial aspect of the organization. I also brewed a SMASH lager with Skagit Valley Malting, the proceeds of which will go to the Pink Boots Portland Chapter. I used Skagit Valley Copeland Pilsner malt and Hüll Melon hops, the first of it will be tapped at the SheBrew festival in Portland on March 8th.
What are you drinking right now (or later)?
Finishing up a brew day as I’m answering these questions, so not currently drinking, but I’ll probably have a lager of some sort this evening.
A fun fact or bit of trivia about you!
I was an Archaeology major at Oregon State Univeristy, I wanted to switch to Fermentation Science my junior year, but when I looked in to it, it was going to take me an extra 2-3 years to graduate so I decided to graduate and figure life out from there.
