University of California, Davis Extension Intensive Brewing Science for Practical Brewing course is an on-site one week course June 10-14, 2019 at Sudwerk Brewing Company in Davis, CA, USA. This scholarship is designed for brewers, assistant brewers, quality personnel or anyone that requires technical training to complete their tasks in the brewhouse. This five day on-site course offers an intensive introduction to the sciences of brewing, engineering and brewing practice. Attendees will learn the technological and biochemical aspects of the entire brewing process from world renowned instructor Michael Lewis in addition to other industry experts. Topics of the interactive lecture sessions cover all aspects of brewing from raw materials to fermentation to quality control and sensory evaluation. In addition to formal lectures, the course includes a tour of a famous craft brewery and beer tasting with a professional sensory scientist. Up to a $1,000 USD stipend will be provided by the Northwest Beer Guide to help offset travel and lodging. This will be awarded to the recipient upon successful completion of the course. The Northwest Beer Guide is a multimedia website focussed on promoting independent, craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest; founded by Paul Orchard. Whether it’s brewed in the Pacific Northwest or sold in the Pacific Northwest, the Northwest Beer Guide is a unique source for news, events, releases, interviews, and guides. As part of a continued commitment to not only promoting independent, craft beer, the Northwest Beer Guide extends its support by sponsoring the Pink Boots Society’s travel scholarship to UC Davis, an exclusive organization empowering women in the beer industry.



Required Applicant Qualifications: Any woman, anywhere in the world, who is actively employed in the beer industry and earns more than 25% of her income from the brewing industry, is qualified for Pink Boots Society membership and to apply for any scholarship. Due to the nature of the course, the selection committee requires that the applicant be 21 years or older and it is highly encouraged that the applicant possess or be familiar with brewing processes and/or related sciences.

Terms & Conditions: All PBS scholarships have a “Pay It Forward” (PIF) requirement, where our scholarship recipients are required to pass on the specific knowledge they gained in their scholarship course to other PBS members and to the industry in general within 6 months of completing the course. This is accomplished through many means like publishing an article, publishing a blog on a reputable website, or giving a presentation at a local, regional or national professional seminar or conference.  Evidence of PIF must be sent to PBS for validation and if applicable, for posting on the PBS website. Many recipients choose to PIF at their local chapter meetings, but you can also present at our annual CBC and GABF meetings. 

All courses require a 50% of the certificate value (to to $500) as a deposit to ensure course participation, completion and 100% passing rates for scholarship recipients. As a condition of accepting the scholarship, the recipient (or recipient’s employer) will pay a deposit in the amount of $500 USD to Pink Boots Society.  Pink Boots Society will reimburse UP TO $1000 USD for travel expenses and accommodation after successful completion of the course is verified.

Please Note: If the recipient fails to successfully complete the course, the deposit and stipend (if applicable) will be forfeited and not reimbursed. Once the PIF is verified, the recipient will receive a Pink Boots Society Flannel Shirt.

Please note that Scholarship Recipients are announced approximately six weeks after the scholarship application window closes. In this case, the recipient will be announced approximately April 15, 2020.
