Course Value:  $2000

A 5 day intensive short course covering the basic aspects of the brewing process. The Appalachian State University brewery operations short course is intended for those working within the brewing industry and the advanced home brewer; specifically, those considering starting a business or intent on increasing their proficiency and understanding of fundamental brewing principles and technologies. Please see below for Required Applicant Qualifications.

Course material is intended to provide the participant with information relevant to testing modules offered by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) while providing thorough discussions around standard brewery operations.  Participants will spend each morning in classroom discussions followed by an introduction to production-level sensory analysis. Afternoons will include hands-on coverage of laboratory skills and analysis, additional classroom discussions, and finishing the day with sensory sessions based on both major and obscure beer styles from around the world.

There will be hands-on brewing activities focused on recipe development and process control and monitoring.  Laboratory sessions are hands-on and intended to provide training as well as an introduction to equipment and basic laboratory setup for a small- to medium-sized brewery. This course, as with all USA courses, will be offered in English only.

A $1000 USD stipend will be provided by Pink Boots Society to help offset travel and lodging. This will be awarded to the recipient upon successful completion of the course.

Required Applicant Qualifications: Any woman, anywhere in the world, who earns at least 25% of her income from the brewing industry, is qualified for Pink Boots Society membership and to apply for any scholarship. This scholarship is funded by and open to members of North Carolina Chapters only.  Click here to join or to connect with us.

Due to the nature of the course, the selection committee requires that the applicant be 21 years or older.

Terms & Conditions: All PBS scholarships have a “Pay It Forward” (PIF) requirement, where our scholarship recipients are required to pass on the specific knowledge they gained in their scholarship course to other PBS members and to the industry in general within 6 months of completing the course. This is accomplished through many means like publishing an article, publishing a blog on a reputable website, or giving a presentation at a local, regional or national professional seminar or conference.  Evidence of PIF must be sent to PBS for validation and if applicable, for posting on the PBS website. Many recipients choose to PIF at their local chapter meetings, but you can also present at our annual CBC and GABF meetings.

All courses require successful completion of the course. Recipients will be billed 50% (up to $500) of the course value if they do not successfully complete the course. As a condition of accepting the scholarship, the recipient (or recipient’s employer) will be liable for these charges if the course is not completed with passing marks in the amount of $500 USD to Pink Boots Society (or equivalent to PBS international chapters). The $1000 USD stipend will also be held until successful completion of the course.

Please Note: If the recipient fails to successfully complete the course, the stipend (if applicable) will be forfeited and not reimbursed. Once the PIF is verified, the recipient will receive a Pink Boots Society flannel shirt.

Please note that Scholarship Recipients are announced approximately six weeks after the scholarship application window closes. In this case, the recipient will be announced approximately April 15, 2020.
